Problem Statement

The housing crisis in Toronto is a complex issue that affects many residents, particularly those with low or moderate incomes. To address this issue, My team set out to create a housing solution that addresses the needs of these residents and addresses the broader issues of affordability, accessibility, and sustainability.

Research

My team began by ideation and research to understand the specific challenges faced by residents in Toronto. We used the building owned by the St. George church for our case study. We also conducted interviews with residents, housing experts, and policymakers, as well as a review of existing housing solutions and policies. Through this research, the team identified two key issues: high housing costs and the lack of available , accessible housing.

Conceptualization

The design of the housing units included multiple shared spaces such as office spaces, co-working spaces, and community spaces that aim to provide more opportunities for residents to interact and share resources. The team also incorporated sustainable features such as green roofs and solar panels to reduce energy costs and promote environmental sustainability.

Design

Once the design was finalized, the team began the development process, working with architects and engineers to turn the designs into functional housing solutions.

We also had conversations with developers and representatives from international organizations to ensure the solution met all necessary regulations and could be implemented in the city.

Final

After several iterations and ideation sessions , the team successfully landed on a life-work intensification housing solution in Toronto, providing a new, sustainable and affordable housing option for residents in the city. The solution was well-received by the IWB organizers and some Toronto residents, who appreciated the reduced housing costs and increased accessibility, as well as the community spaces and sustainable features.

Next steps

This case study demonstrated that through user-centered design and a research-based approach, it is possible to create a housing solution that addresses the complex issues of affordability, accessibility, and sustainability.
